The season starts at the Boutique Hostal Salinas, Saturday 5th April

Galicia comes to Ibiza with the BHS’ new restaurant concept

Once Upon a Time Sunday Market goes weekly

(CAN FIX/ Ibiza/Thurs 3rd April 2014)

With Spring upon us and Ibiza’s high season around the next corner, those formidable folk at the Boutique Hostal Salinas have announced the first details of their plans for the months ahead, kicking off with their 2014 opening, this Saturday 5th April.

Following close on the heels of the hotel’s recent appearance in the Sunday Times’ list of Top 50 Mediterranean Beach Hotels (with a highly admirable number 10 position!), and as per every year, the BHS team have slogged long and hard over the winter with renovations and preparations to make this summer one to remember, with the introduction of not only a full event agenda but also a brand new restaurant concept and menu.

Lets start with the Opening Do. This Saturday from 2pm and the doors swing wide open with some of Ibiza’s beloved resident DJs lining up to welcome the season in style with, amongst other shenanigans, a live radio broadcast from 4-8pm on Ibiza Sonica 95.2fm (not to mention a live streaming on Manhandling the decks throughout the day, We Love’s Big L sets standards high alongside Andy Baxter, Christian Len, Mark Canovas, Andy Wilson, David Phillips and Bruno from Ibiza.

On the culinary side of things, expect an insight into the hotel’s new menu, bringing a taste of Galicia to Ibiza’s shores- a marisquería serving the freshest fish and seafood and of course, for the carnivores, a selection of the finest meats on the market. This Saturday then, and the hotel’s owners are excited to introduce the two man team in charge of all things edible- Anxo Ares and José Manuel Pinaque – flown in especially from Santiago de Compostela in the aforementioned region of Northern Spain. Expect tongues to be wagging in all directions.

Straight off the back of that and starting as they mean to go on, midday on Sunday 6th April and the hotel’s team are going back to the future with the return of last season’s success story- the Once Upon a Time Market, already confirmed as a weekly event and with a profusion of artisans, local designers and vintage sellers coming together to seamlessly fuse art, fashion and musictaking over the hotel grounds till the sun sets over Salinas. With Daisy Heartbreaker on the fine tune selection and cocktails and snacks served throughout the day, the Once Upon a Time events became a regular fixture in every discerning fashionista’s diary last summer- this season, the Boutique Hostal Salinas are taking it to the next level with some 40 stallholders already confirmed. Mooching round a market- it’s what Sundays were made for.

Now, those familiar with the Boutique Hostal Salinas will also recognise the name of the team’s sister bar, Lo Cura, in Ibiza port, by now famed as an institution and currently undergoing something of a respite due to its own renovations. Lo Cura Lounge, however, a spin off of the favoured watering hole, already featured regularly on the We Love…Space programme last summer, becoming a key party point amongst Ibiza locals and tourists alike. The good news is that Lo Cura Lounge is back- not only at Space Ibiza but also as a regular feature on the hotel’s own events calendar, under the loving care of its creator, David Phillips.

Phillips, who in addition is one of three masterminds of the entire Boutique Hostal Salinas concept alongside partners Duesi Wolfmeir and Anita Dey, had this to say on all of the above: “With all the wild revelations that Spring in Ibiza is currently unveiling, we want to keep on rocking it in our own way- as a hotel, restaurant, lounge and party venue along with regular jaunts to our own room at Space”.

And talking of parties, it’s Aries season in Ibiza and God knows, there are a fair few of those starry-eyed types floating about, so much so that it’s become a bit of a thing with the island’s groovy groovesters. It’s fitting therefore that the same David Phillips and his ladybelle, Daisy Heartbreaker, both celebrate their birthdays this month, with shindigs confirmed at the hotel on 9th April (Daisy) and 16th April (Dave). Also in the pipeline for the coming season, those Sunshine People are set for a regular reappearance but more details on that and a host of other events coming up next time.

Just one more thing- and it’s rather a biggie! Boutique Hostal Salinas have confirmed the release, in May 2014, of their first, and long overdue, musical representation- a 3CD compilation, out on Seamless Recordings with CDs 1 + 2 mixed by BHS’ own David Phillips. CD 1 will focus on the Salinas Lounge sound typical of the hotel, described by Phillips as a collection of  ‘low slung, dubby disco meets movie themes and indie torch anthems’ whilst CD2 dances down a different road and celebrates 10 glorious years of the Lo Cura Bar, hugely reminiscent of a night out at Lo Cura Lounge at We Love…Space. Prepare for a veritable ‘Backroom Heaven leaning heavily towards a misspent youth dancing to Electro, Disco, New Wave, Punk, Techno and House music’. The Lo Cura brand is often associated with a certain strain of Ibiza hedonism- and this CD is certainly indicative of that.

Onto Cd3 and step up the PBR Streetgang, dear friends of the BHS trio and ones who have adopted the hotel as their spiritual home from home over the last years. Hotter than hot plates on the current scene right now, PBR promise an extra special mix to round off this, the first Boutique Hostal Salinas compilation.

For now though, it’s all about getting those final wheels in motion for the start of the 2014 season and the countdown is on. With only days to go, the Boutique Hostal Salinas team are putting the finishing touches to the preparations, ready for the influx of hotel guests and visitors that are set to grace the place from now to October.

You are most cordially invited to join them this coming weekend, the first of their summer season 2014.

With the invisible finishing line in sight, one might be inclined to think things were winding down at the Boutique Hostal Salinas and its various spin off hot spots. Not so – in fact, the Salinas Trio seem to have no intentions of calling it a day or a night with plans already being put into place for the winter months.

Before that, though, lets look at what’s coming up in what’s left of September…

With last night’s Lo Cura Lounge hootenanny fresh in our minds (like, VERY fresh…),  and with it being the penultimate party of what has been a tremendously successful summer in El Salon for the Lo Cura Lounge crew, it’s fair to say DJs Jon Woodall, Daisy Heartbreaker, Brian Beezwax, David Phlllips and Stray Kitten gave it their all for MEXICO DAY- and for better or for worse, those kind bods behind Ibiza’s newest watering hole- La Mezcaleria- pulled the stops out to make sure that all manner of tequila and tings were freely flowing… Like we needed encouragement…

So, just the one more to go then and that’s for the We Love… Closing Party on 29 Sept,  when Lo Cura Lounge will be welcoming Simon Rigg, owner of Phonica Records (world renowned record shop of God-like status in Soho), a place frequented by every smokin’ hot name in the business ever- plus J.G. Wilkes, one half of Optimo, the legendary Glaswegian DJ duo whose style runs along a Andrew Wetherall, Ivan Smagghe, Trevor Jackson type of vibe. These dudes are the ultimate experts in tracing the lineage between 80’s New Wave, Punk, Rockabilly, Dub, Disco, Techno, Indie, Film Noir and the list goes on….

David Phillips, Captain of the Lo Cura Lounge Crew, sums it up nicely:

“I cannot f*cking wait!”

Meanwhile, back at the Boutique Hostal Salinas:

19 + 26 SEPT

We say Très Bien to Bruno From Ibiza, Angel Cielo and Julien Tax who have waved their Sunshine People flag proudly at the Boutique Hostal Salinas over the summer months. With only two more fêtes a la Francaise before they bid us à bientôt and skip off into the Salinas Sunset, we plan to eat, drink and be merry- BBQ + Cocktails+ Dancing. In that order.

If there was ever an ideal location for a Sunday Night Market, it is surely the Boutique Hostal Salinas. ‘Once Upon a Time’ takes place bi-monthly in and around the grounds of the BHS, combining vintage fashion with contemporary hand made pieces, colourful kaftans and kooky headwear plus much, much more- a little fashionlandia run by a trio of Italianas who know a good thing when they see it.

The Bad News- Sunday 22 Sept sees the last gathering of the Once Upon a Timers for this summer.

The Good News- We can confirm that the Sunday Market will continue through the winter months! More details as we get them!

31 OCT

Boutique Hostal Salinas has earned itself a bit of a worthy reputation over the last couple of years as being one of the unmissable pit stops on the island’s Halloween Route. Whilst details are invariably sketchy at this point, rest assured the stops will be pulled out to pull up a hairy monster of a celebration of the dead and the back from the dead.

For those of you who still haven’t sampled the culinary delights on offer at Restaurant Hostal Salinas, those kind people behind the operation- David Phillips, Duesi Wolfmeir and Anita Dey not to mention Chef Dani Gastalver- have a little end-of-season offer for the foodies amongst you. Two, actually.

1)    Free bottle of our house wine with your meal when you whisper the magic words KILL BILL

2)    Residents! Get 30% of your total restaurant bill when you whisper the magic words KILL JILL

The bar that brought us all together- Bar Lo Cura, run by the same BHS crew, continues to open Mon-Sat from 11-3/3.30 with weekly guests Karlos Sense (Thurs), Daisy Heartbreaker(Fri) and Ian Blevins(Sat) keeping things nicely ticking over in between times.

The Boutique!

The big news of the week at the BHS is the fact that the Boutique now has its own Boutique! Managed by Katy, expect one-off designer pieces including gorgeous kaftans perfect for the beach as well as some rather more unusual items…the gold and silver fingernails spring to mind…

The Restaurant!

The BHS team were delighted this week to see that word on their A la Carte Restaurant had spread far and wide to the Spanish Mainland. Amongst other coverage, a sturdy piece in national paper, Expansion. Proving the power of the press, two local residents came to try the menu with the very newspaper under their arm. Yay!

The BHS A la Carte restaurant is open every day from 2.30pm with a Daily Menu also available for 15€

Once Upon a Time!

After the first BRILLIANT edition of Daniela & Luana’s Sunday Market, called Once Upon a Time, part 2 is set to be even bigger and busier. Taking place from 5pm on a Sunday, a variety of stalls selling designer, vintage and reconditioned items at reasonable prices.  Bargains, DJs and Fajitas plus drinks and dancing: Perfect Sunday!

The Dinner Party!

Literally moving Heaven & Earth to bring you an evening of art, design, sound and performance, Dutch label Coochy Music is also getting involved in this elegant evening out with DJ Sean Maccaff joining B.P and Hermanez to provide the soundtrack…make your reservation to dine with the artists:

More Info:

21st July : Sundays are the new Sundays, did you not know?! 21st July is the next date with disco destiny for the Lo Cura Team and this time round Captain David Phillips is joined in the booth by Amp & Deck, Andy Carroll and Daisy Heartbreaker. Fun pretty much guaranteed.

Back up the road in Ibiza Port, and Bar Lo Cura is where you’ll find those in the know hanging out…Open 6 nights a week, with a music policy of ‘as long as it’s good’, here is a bar free of pretension and full of friends…

Friday 12th

After a small sojourn, Lo Cura Darling Daisy Heartbreaker is back for an evening of choice rocktronica and even choicer tequila. Arriba…The kind of night that will most definitely put hairs on your chest.

Saturday 13th

Being Saturday, it’s all about the Pre-Love with a warm up for the monster shindig that is We Love Space On Sunday. DJ SHARMA is in charge of putting on the move-busters plus there’s rumour of a secret special guest who’s so secret we don’t even know who it is…

So, there you go, plenty to see, do, taste, hear between the BHS and Lo Cura…stick your head in, why don’t you, we’d love to see you!

すし屋へようこそ! Welcome to Sushiya!

SUSHIYA AOYAMA: Sushi & Sake at the bar

Chef Hideki Aoyama opens his new restaurant Sushiya Aoyama in this, the first weekend of May, with a special Japanese menu and Sushi Workshop as part of the 5th Ibiza-Japanese Week.

Ibiza, 1st May 2012 (FIX Ibiza).-
Sake and sushi form the backbone of this culinary proposal by Sushiya Aoyoma, a discreet and unassuming sushi bar set just outside the walls of the world heritage site of Ibiza, in Plaza de Sa Drassaneta, off calle de la Virgen, which opens this Friday 4th May.
Its chef, Hideki Aoyama, a graduate from the prestigious Tokyo Sushi Academy, and taught by Japanese Sushi Masters Makoto Fukue and Suehiki Shimizu, claims his inspiration for the Sushiya concept comes from a hybrid of three of the most popular types of eaterie in his homeland of the Rising Sun- the sushiya (sushi bar), izakaya (tapas bar) y tachinomiya (after-work bar). In each of those, Sake is the drink of choice, just like at Sushiya Aoyama.

The mainstay of the menu is its rice and fish, using the freshest products on the market and the most popular sushi rice amongst Japanese chefs, YumeNishiki. Add to that, common Japanese ingredients like seaweed, tofu, daikon, miso, soya, with Chef Aoyoma preparing daily authentic examples of Japanese originality and flavour.

5th Japanese Week

To celebrate the 5th Japanese Week in Ibiza, Sushiya Aoyoma has prepared a special tasting menu for this weekend, consisting of sake, hijiki salad, chef’s selection of sushi and miso soup, Price 15€, Fri 4th and Saturday 5th May for 15 €, from 7pm-11.30pm. This Saturday morning, 4th May also sees Chef Aoyoma give a Sushi Workshop at Sushiya Aoyoma, Plaza Sa Drassaneta, from 11am-1.30pm ( Course Full)
