KEEPING FREDDIE’S FLAME ALIVE

 Image

The second annual Ibiza ‘Freddie for a Day’ Fundraiser for the Mercury Phoenix Trust is confirmed for Sunday 2nd September

Special guests confirmed include 2Mercury BJs, Mark Jones, Lottie, Andy Carroll, Colin Peters, Stray Kitten and Grayson Shipley plus a VERY SPECIAL GUEST with a special live performance from Wall of Sound’s hotly tipped next best thing, BB and upcoming band, Visitors.

The date of the event coincides with what would have been the Queen front man’s 66th birthday.

Ibiza//FIX Ibiza//30 Aug 2012

Just when you thought you couldn’t possibly squeeze any more fun into your summer, Ibiza Rocks proves you wrong once again. Following on from the success of last year’s ‘Freddie for a Day’ charity fundraiser at Ibiza Rocks House, Mark Jones & his Wall of Sound crew are back for more fun and nonsense, all in the best possible taste, and all for a great cause- The Mercury Phoenix Trust- that wonderful legacy left to us by international music icon, Freddie Mercury, not to mention the fellow members of his supergroup- Queen.

Sunday, 2nd September is the date confirmed for the event, with the early part of the day set aside for munchin’ and a-minglin’ alongside the traditional Sunday Roast from 2pm. A spot of lunch, a dip in the hotel’s famous pool, a quick snooze and it’s time to get togs on and ‘tashed up for what is set to be yet one more magic moment in the annals of Ibiza Rocks history.

As per last year, organiser Mark Jones, Wall of Sound main man, has put together a line up that really stands out from the Ibiza crowd. As well as DJs including Lottie, Andy Carroll, Colin Peters, Stray Kitten and Grayson Shipley, get set for three headlining guest DJs SO special we are not even allowed to announce it. But hear this, you’d be mental to miss it…

And then there are the live elements of the event. Ibiza Rocks House are pleased to present an exclusive performance from UK band, Visitors, as well as, brought to us by Wall Of Sound, BB. Hotly tipped as the next best thing. BB were formed after a chance meeting at the BBC Introducing Master Class of 2011 at Abbey Road Studios. Singer Billy Wright & drummer Robert Gulston immediately bonded over a passion for pop songs, dance music and exciting live shows. After locking themselves away in a studio in their hometown of Southend, the duo honed their writing formula and emerged in 2012 with a galvanised sound and a live show that combines euphoric samples, thumping drums, explosive guitars and insanely catchy melodies. They are currently adding the final touches to their debut album.

Asked about their upcoming gig at Ibiza Rocks House and BB had this to say: “Freddie was the kind of musician you wanted to be from the first time you picked up a mic or sat down to write a song. There was something magnetic about his performances, he had thousands of people in the palm of his hand…No one has come close since. So when you get asked to go to Ibiza and pay tribute to Freddie, you go!”

Bearing in mind at all times that this is a fundraising event, party goers are asked to seriously get involved! As well as encouraging as many Freddie lookie-likees as possible on the night, organisers stressed that the easiest way to make a contribution to the cause was by purchasing your Freddie Moustache on entrance to Ibiza Rocks House, with all proceeds going directly to the Mercury Phoenix Trust.

From the depths of his dressing up box, in the search for his Freddie costume, no doubt, Mark Jones piped up that “after last years’ crazy scenes and amazing night of fun-fun-fun it seems only right to press play and pay homage to Freddie again with Ibiza Rocks House / Pikes Hotel as the incredible setting.Bringing to light the creative genius and talent of Mr. Mercury to Ibiza is a real honour..

We Will, We Will Rock You ! ”

About the Charity:

Freddie Mercury died of AIDS related causes in London on 24th November 1991. Almost immediately after, the remaining members of Queen and Jim Beach, the band’s manager, took the decision to raise money and awareness about AIDS in his memory. Together they organised the 1992 Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert for AIDS Awareness. The Mercury Phoenix Trust was founded to distribute the monies raised from this concert and it has continued to be engaged in numerous other fundraising activities.

Since 1992 the Mercury Phoenix Trust has been responsible for donating more than $15 million in the fight against AIDS making over 750 grants to charities worldwide. Applications for grants have come in from many countries around the world and collaboration has been realised with groups as far removed as the World Health Organisation to grass-root organisations run partly by voluntary workers in Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, Zambia, Nepal and India. The Trust has adapted its policy to concentrate on HIV/AIDS education and awareness in the developing world.

The legend of Pikes Hotel.

When it comes to rock n roll anecdotes, Freddie Mercury’s fame where Pikes Hotel is concerned is legendary. A regular fixture of the hotel, he was a close friend of the hotel’s original owner Tony Pike ‘back in the day’ and as the story so famously goes, Mercury celebrated his 41st birthday at the hidden hotel; a party that lasted for days and spawned many of the aforementioned anecdotes.

These days, and although the world is a less flamboyant place since the passing of the Queen vocalist, his memory lives on at Ibiza Rocks House at Pikes, not least through the Freddie Suite at Ibiza Rocks House; an enormous room, the centre of hedonism and happy times during Freddie’s reign, now converted into one of the island’s nocturnal hot-spots for those in the know. Lovingly restored under the ownership and careful direction of Ibiza’s foremost live music promoters, Andy McKay and Dawn Hindle. Ibiza Rocks House at Pikes continues to celebrate Freddie’s free spirit and zest for life.

As a final point to note, with the date of the event so close to what would have been Freddie Mercury’s 66th birthday, the aim of the event is to celebrate the life and times of one of the best, whilst raising funds to help those affected by what took him from us.

Because ‘these are the days of our lives…’ Lets make it a suitable homage to the King of Queen…

For those unfamiliar with the name, Urban in Ibiza is an annual showcase/party held annually at leading rural hotel, Atzaro, in Sant Joan, Ibiza.

Over the last four years, Urban in Ibiza has become undoubtedly one of the highlights of the Ibiza summer calendar, bringing together a wealth of urban art talent that, quite simply, is unmatched in the urban art world and which includes some of the greatest urban artists of our time. Amongst artists showing at this latest exhibition: Banksy, Goldie, Inkie, Fin Dac, Agent Provocateur, Pure Evil, Jim Vision, Mr. Trazo, Schoony, Ben Slow, Cept and many more.

As far as this final fling at Ocean Beach Club is concerned, organisers will be exhibiting a select number of the urban art pieces from the 2012 show including its star attractions – Goldie’s recent portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and Banksy’s ‘Barcode Leopard’. These and the other pieces in the show are available for sale.

DJs at the do are confirmed as Gianluca de Tiberis, Tom Crane, Samir and Dave Lubin. Island band Hot Ice are also confirmed for a repeat of their recent Urbantastic show, which included a spine-tingling performance from the local 30-piece gospel choir.

 Ibiza Rocks

 ———————————————–

We regret to confirm that tonight’s support act Azealia Banks has been forced to cancel her performance at Ibiza Rocks tonight due to exhaustion. Azealia was unable to perform her full set at Mallorca Rocks last night and has regrettably decided she can not perform this evening.

We are incredibly disappointed as this was one of the few gigs Azealia had kept in her summer schedule and its a real shame for us and the fans to have it fall through at the last minute.

Tonight’s show of course goes ahead headlined by Example in his only live appearance on the island this summer. Doors 7pm.

Imprescindible.

IBIZA ROCKS & WE ARE ROCKSTARS PRESENTAN: MIÉRCOLES 22 DE AGOSTO, DESDE LAS 19.00H: IBIZA ROCKS: HAPPY MONDAYS + REVEREND & THE MAKERS

Inline image 1Inline image 2

AN AUDIENCE WITH GOVERT DE ROOS- the rock n roll education continues at Ibiza Rocks House

Ibiza, 15th August 2012 (FIX Ibiza)

When it comes to real rock n roll destinations of the 70s and 80s, Holland was way up there with the best of them, hosting the world’s top musicians and some of the most important events in the history of music from that time. Behind the lens, Govert de Roos was knee deep in the scene, ready to capture the essence of music for posterity with the help of his trusty camera..

As far as setting the bar high goes, de Roos’ picture of the peace and love ‘bed-in’ of John Lennon and Yoko Ono at the Hilton Hotel in Amsterdam is an undeniable classic moment in the history of music and from there the Dutch photographer went on to work one on one with The Jackson 5, Abba, Grace Jones, Peter Frampton, Joe Cocker, Whitney Houston and Blondie. That’s not to mention his stunning ‘live on stage’ shots of bands like Queen, Janis Joplin and Bob Marley.

When we consider that this was the last era before digital came steaming into the world of photography, it’s not difficult to work out that the music/photography bond back then was a whole different ballgame to the modern day rockstar shoot. A different time, when a different connection existed between the musician and the photographer.

It is that spirit, that trust, those naive pre-paparazzi times, that Govert De Roos photos capture so beautifully.

Nearly forty years on and it’s time to relive that past- just for a while, with an exclusive appearance by the Govert de Roos himself, in an unprecendented visit to Ibiza, more specifically, at Ibiza Rocks House @ Pikes Hotel.  Having dusted off his archives and selected his personal favourites, ‘An Audience with Govert de Roos’ is set to take place on Saturday 25th Auguest.

More specifically, the exhibition, entitled ‘Hard Copy’, will comprise of a  selection of some fifty classic examples of the photographer’s work and will show until 28th August at the island’s original rock and roll hotel. A number of pieces (including some originals) will also be available for purchase on the night of the event,  with de Roos on hand to personally sign the pictures.

‘An Audience with Govert de Roos’ is the second in the Ibiza Rocks initiative , the first having been hosted by Rolling Stone’s first photographer-in-chief, Baron Wolman on 12th June. De Roos, just like Wolman, is expected to enthrall his audience with the stories behind his pictures and tales of pure rocky horror and high japes- not to mention images of great including Abba, Blondie, David Bowie, Herman Brood, Joe Cocker, Lennard Cohen, Duran Duran, Eurythmics, Brian Ferry, Peter Frampton, Whitney Houston, Jackson 5, Elton John, Grace Jones, Janis Joplin, Chaka Khan, Kiss, Paul McCartney, Freddy Mercury, John Lennon & Yoko Ono, Bob Marley, Ringo Star, Miami Sound Machine, Sting, Cindy Lauper, Prince, Sade and Status Quo.

As far as the venue goes, Ibiza Rocks House @ Pikes really is the ideal spot for such an occasion, already famous worldwide for its own 80s hey-day when Freddie Mercury and Grace Jones were regulars, Willie Nelson, Bon Jovi and Julio Iglesias frequent guests. Even Wham choose the hotel as the backdrop to their monster smash hit, Club Tropicana, turning the Pikes swimming pool into a must visit by any diehard 80s kid.  All in all, the place boasts more rock n roll memorabilia from back in the day than a read through Ozzy Osbourne’s diary.

Back to the future, and these days, the 26 room boutique hotel, hidden in the San Antonio hills, is owned by two of Ibiza’s original forward-thinkers and party-makers- Andy Mc Kay and Dawn Hindle- Mr & Mrs Ibiza Rocks. Since 2005, with the start of their pioneering live events, IRH/PIKES has witnessed a staggering number of today’s music scene pass through its kooky grounds, all thanks to Ibiza Rocks bringing the live back to Ibiza. And so, the legacy continues and rock and roll will never die…
